Michael J. Cannavino, 94

Michael J. Cannavino, 94, of 304 Desmond St., Sayre, Pa., passed away Sunday morning, July 28, 2013 at the Robert Packer Hospital in Sayre.

Michael was born in Sayre on Aug. 14, 1918, the son of Angelo and Concetta Dabbiero Cannavino. He was a graduate of Sayre High School class of 1936 and later served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. Following completion of his military service, Michael attended Syracuse University and the Albany Law School. He owned and operated Cannavino's Used Cars on Keystone Avenue in Sayre for many years until his retirement. Michael was a communicant of the Church of the Epiphany in Sayre and was a life member of the Sayre Elks Lodge. He served as a volunteer at the Robert Packer Hospital in Sayre for 12 years and was a recipient of the Volunteer of the Year Award. Michael also served as a volunteer at the Veterans Out-Patient Facility for a number of years and remained active until the time of his death. Michael enjoyed going to Tioga Downs to socialize with friends.

He is survived by his brother, Angelo Cannavino of Sayre; sister and brother-in-law, Elizabeth and Roger McKeon of Rochester, N.Y.; nieces, Sharon Hoobler and Donna Benson; nephews, Edward Saxe and Harry Fritz as well as numerous additional nieces, nephews, grand-nieces, grand-nephews and cousins.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers, Patrick, Joseph, Harry and James Cannavino; sisters, Elvera Saxe, Antoinette Orapallo, Mary Fritz and Edith VanVestrout; and sister-in-law, Leona "Jean" Cannavino.

The family will receive friends Thursday from 3 to 5 p.m. at the Alteri-Bowen Funeral Home, 314 Desmond St., Sayre, Pa. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday, Aug. 2, 2013 at 9:30 a.m. at the Church of the Epiphany, South Elmer Ave., Sayre. Interment will follow in Our Lady of Perpetual Help Cemetery, Ridgebury Twp., Pa., with the Valley Color Guard according full military honors.

The family suggests that contributions be directed to the Sayre Public Library, 122 S. Elmer Ave., Sayre, PA or to the Epiphany School, 627 Stevenson St., Sayre, PA 18840 in Michael J. Cannavino's memory.
