LEGO Wizards headed to Robotics Challenge
11/2/2012 9:50:00 AM
Towanda, PA -- LEGO Wizards, the FIRST LEGO® League team in Bradford County, is headed to the Twin Tiers Robotics Challenge held at the Corning Community College Gymnasium in Corning, NY on Saturday, November 10 starting at Noon till 5p.m.

Through this year’s Senior Solutions™ Challenge theme, our young community members will explore and propose novel uses of technology to enhance the lives and impact of Senior Citizens in our community. The theme addresses ways to ensure our elder members are able to live independently, remain engaged with and contributing to their communities and connected to their families and the world at large.

A highlight of the program is participation in an exciting robot game in which unique autonomous robots created from scratch by each team compete for points in a timed game. Over 20,000 teams worldwide will be playing the exact same game. Our local winners move on to regional and international championships.

Over 200,000 children from 44 countries worldwide and the Corning regional area have been tasked with the challenge and excitement of designing and building an original robot in the FIRST LEGO® League program (www.firstlegoleague.org). Eight weeks of research and design will be on display at the 2012 Twin Tier's Robotics Challenge event where as many as twenty teams of our area’s talented youth will demonstrate their problem-solving skills, creative thinking, teamwork, competitive play, sportsmanship, and sense of community. Among the participants are boys and girls in teams from Corning, Big Flats, Horseheads, Ithaca, Watkins Glen and Endicott.

This year’s challenge, “Senior Solutions”, is judged in several areas: research and presentation on innovative solutions to senior citizenship challenges, robot game performance; technical mechanics of the robot’s construction; and FIRST™ Core Values that includes teamwork, gracious professionalism, mutual respect and inclusiveness. The highest honor will go to the team that best exemplifies the spirit and values of the program. Every participant will receive a certificate to commemorate the experience and dedication to the eight-week process. We expect four of the top teams will move on to regional championships in Rochester in December and perhaps the World Festival in Atlanta next year.
