Carlos Twichell of Lakeland, 94
11/2/2012 9:19:00 AM
Carlos Twichell of Lakeland, Fla. and formerly of LeRoy, passed away on Oct. 30, 2012 at 94 years of age.

We have this assurance, that if we love the Lord, we will someday all be together again in Heaven. What a glorious day that will be.

Carlos Leslie Twichell, "Twich" to all who knew him, was born on Oct. 24, 1918 in Perry, N.Y. to Erwin and Mary (Handley) Twichell. He met Ethel Laning at college. They were married in 1939 and moved to Roslyn. Twich was drafted in the Second World War. Days before he was to leave, he received a presidential deferment. Twich never knew until after the war's end that the deferment was because he was working in a machine shop that made parts for the atom bomb.

After retiring as the owner of Twichell's Heating, Roofing and Air Conditioning Co. in Roslyn, Twich moved to his beloved farm in LeRoy. There he loved the view of South Mountain, gardening and raising Angora Goats. He and his wife Ethel spent half the year in Lakeland and half the year at their LeRoy farm. Ethel died on February 28, 1999 after 59 years of marriage. In September of 2000, Twich married Virginia Jacobson, a longtime friend from Lakeland.

Most important in Twich's life was his personal relationship with Jesus Christ. During summer, he attended the East Canton United Methodist Church; during winters, the Light and Life Free Methodist Church in Lakeland. Twich served on many conferences and local church boards in the Free Methodist Church.

Surviving are his wife, Virginia; two children, Joyce (Ira) Haire and Larry Twichell; four grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren; a stepdaughter, Patricia Jacobson; several nieces, nephews, cousins and many dear friends; and especially his good buddy Pat VanDyke.

A memorial service to honor Twich's life will be held 2 p.m. Monday, Nov. 5, at Lakeland's Free Methodist Church. A private burial will be in the East Canton Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to Light & Life Free Methodist Church, 5730 Deeson Rd. or to Florida's Light & Life Camp, Inc. at 5602 Deeson Rd. both in Lakeland, FL 33810.

Pepper Funeral Home in Canton is assisting his family with arrangements. Share online condolences at www.pepperfuneralhomes.com
