CCC’s Walter R. Smith Visiting Scholar Series to Host “Borrow: The American Way of Debt” by Dr. Louis Hyman
10/24/2012 9:50:00 AM
CORNING, NY -- Corning Community College’s Walter R. Smith Visiting Scholar Series will host Dr. Louis Hyman on Thursday, October 25, 2012 at 8 p.m. in the Triangle Lounge, Commons Building, Spencer Hill campus, Corning, NY, as he presents, “Borrow: The American Way of Debt.”

Dr. Hyman, assistant professor in the Labor Relations, Law, and History Department at Cornell University’s ILR School, will discuss how the rise of consumer borrowing in the 1920s, just before the Great Depression, altered our culture and economy. He will also discuss New York’s role as a center of this financial innovation, which allowed lending to grow more and more profitable, but in turn, displaced funds available for business borrowing - a reconfiguration that set our economy on an unsustainable course. Dr. Hyman will provide a historical perspective on the temptation to live beyond one’s means; and offer suggestions for a stable, prosperous credit market in the future.

Raised in Baltimore, MD, Dr. Hyman attended Columbia University, where he received a bachelor’s degree in History and Mathematics. A former Fulbright Scholar and McKinsey consultant, he received a Ph.D. in American History in 2007 from Harvard University. His first book, Debtor Nation: The History of America in Red Ink (Princeton University Press, 2011), focused on the history of the political economy of debt and was selected as one of the 2011 Choice Top 25 Outstanding Books of the Year. His second book, Borrow: The American Way of Debt (Vintage, 2012), explained how American culture shaped finance and in turn how finance shaped culture. Hyman’s writings have appeared in the New York Times, The Atlantic, Wilson Quarterly, Bloomberg, CNBC, and other newspapers, journals, and blogs, as well as essay collections. He is the founding series editor of the Columbia Studies in the History of U.S. Capitalism from Columbia University Press.

The Walter R. Smith Visiting Scholar Series is in its sixth year of bringing notable speakers to Corning. The mission of the Series is to stimulate thought and encourage discussion around a broad range of topics including the arts, politics, science, history, nature, and contemporary culture.
