Fredric H. Mader, 79

Fredric H. Mader of Sayre, passed away at home on Wednesday, Oct. 17, 2012.
He was born in Hazleton, on Oct. 22, 1932, the son of the late Eleanor and Fred W. Mader. He was also predeceased by a brother Karl in 2011.
He graduated from McAdoo High School and received his Bachelor and Master of Science degrees in education from Pennsylvania State University. While there, he was a participant in ROTC.
After college, Fred served on active duty with the Air Force in two separate enlistments. He was a member of the Air Force Reserves, completing 20 years of service, and, during the 1970s, he served as a liaison officer for the Air Force Academy, completing his career as a Lieutenant Colonel.
He was employed as a science and chemistry teacher in the Sayre Area Schools for 37 years.
Fred had a lifelong interest in photography, especially of wildflowers and nature. In the 1960s, he participated in the Elmira Camera Club and later in the Southern Tier Organization of Photographers, Cayuga Nature Photographers, Roberson Camera Club and the Grand Canyon Photo Club. He enjoyed presenting slide shows of his work to many groups in Pennsylvania and New York. He was a member of the Photographic Society of America and earned a Star Exhibitor rating in nature photography. He displayed his work within the area, entering local competitions and winning several awards.
He participated in photo shoots on predatory animals in Minnesota, led by Len Rue Jr. and Perry Conway and in McClure, Pa. with Joe and Mary MacDonald on the subject of reptiles. He attended a seminar on Impressionism with Andre Gallant and another with noted Canadian Courtney Milne.
Fred was a juried member of the Valley Fine Arts and Crafts Council. He was a member of the Carantouan Greenway and participated in its tracker program, the Susquehanna Valley Audubon Society, the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, and served on the Sayre Borough planning board.
Fred is survived by his wife of 46 years, Maryanne Turchetti Mader; his son Fredric Jr. of Randolph, N.J.; cousins Henry Mader and June Mader; along with several other cousins.
Friends and family may call on from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 19 at the Alteri-Bowen Funeral Home, 314 Desmond St., Sayre.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 20, 2012 at the Church of the Epiphany, 304 South Elmer Ave. in Sayre. Burial will follow in the Tioga Point Cemetery, Athens, with the Valley Color Guard according full military honors.
