Ernest F. "Ernie" Yates Sr., 68, of Potterville, passed away Monday, Sept. 24, 2012, at the Robert Packer Hospital in Sayre. "Ernie," as he was known by his family and friends, was born June 15, 1944 in Sayre, the son of Robert Yates Sr. and Marjorie Smith Yates. In early years he was employed by the Tamarack Farm in Standing Stone and was later employed by GTE Sylvania in Towanda for 25 years until declining health no longer permitted him to continue. He enjoyed the outdoors, hunting and fishing and was a social member of Haigh's Pond VFW Post No. 6824, Rome.
He is survived by his children, Pam Franklin of Potterville and Ernest Yates Jr. and his fianceé Sheila Horton of Rome; grandsons, William Franklin Jr. of Warren Center and Harland Franklin of Potterville; sisters and brothers-in-law Amanda Johnson of Wysox, Rose and Fred Sites of Towanda, Lillian Vanderpool of Towanda, Darlene Yates and Richy Leighton of Towanda, Tina and Robert Robinson of Wysox, Frank Horton of Rome and Ting Leighton of Wysox; brothers and sisters-in-law Eddy and Mary Yates of Rome, Ronnie and Dawn Yates of Wysox and Billy and Wanda Yates of Towanda; mother-in-law, Clara Wizelman of Wysox; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law Richard McNeal and his wife Lois of North Carolina, Randy McNeal and his wife Terry of Athens and Greg Simons and his wife Lisa of Rome; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law Connie VanHorn and her husband Jim of Elmira, N.Y., Donna Smith and her husband Irvin Jr. of Rome, Pat Coyle and her husband Tim of Barton, N.Y. and Terri LaBarre and her fiancé Dave Hamm of Rome; a special aunt, Gwen Lovelady of Florida; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 46 years, Dorothy "Dotti" McNeal Yates on Sept. 17, 2010, brothers, Lewis, Walt, Robert Jr. and Lyle and sisters, Kathy Johnson, Marion (Harrison) Fenton, Shirley (Charles) Fulton, Marilyn Horton, and Colleen Yates.
The funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 28, 2012 at the Maryott-Bowen Funeral Home, 217 York Ave., Towanda, with the Rev. Robert Martin officiating. Interment will follow in the Darling Cemetery, Orwell Twp.
The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Friday at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be directed to the VFW Post No. 6824 Ladies Auxiliary Cancer Fund, 1468 Haigh's Pond Road, Rome, PA 18837, to the Hematology-Oncology Department, Robert Packer Hospital, Guthrie Square, Sayre, PA 18840 or to the H.O.P.S. Ambulance Association, in care of James W. Seipler, secretary-treasurer, 606 Ridge Road, Rome, PA 18837 in Ernie's memory.
