Leona Frey, 88, lifelong resident of Shunk, went home to her Lord and Savior on Sunday, Sept. 23, 2012 at Towanda Memorial Hospital.
Leona was born in Shunk on Oct. 31, 1923, one of seven children in the family of the late John Lewis and Mary Anna (Bartlow) Brown. She married Lawrence D. Frey on June 14, 1941. They were blessed with 58 years together and raised four children before his passing on July 30, 1999.
Leona's faith in God's word was her guide through life. She was an active member for over 60 years of the Shunk United Methodist Church and the ladies aid group. She served as the first woman superintendant of the church's Sunday school. In addition to her care and devotion for family and home, Leona worked for 12 years for Dr. Young, the ophthalmologist in Canton. She was happiest when keeping busy and enjoyed many hobbies among them knitting, crocheting, tatting and quilting. She also enjoyed masonry work, gardening, tending to her flowers and just taking in the wide-open spaces.
Surviving are her children, Lawrence Jr. "Larry" Frey (Bea McCue) of Shunk, Ina Rose (Donald) Harding of Athens, Donald Lee (Maureen) Frey of Unityville and Lillian Leona Waldeisen of Williamsport; nine grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren; three siblings, Marion Frey of Shunk, Geraldine Gilbert of Forksville and Beatrice Bailey of Boonville, N.Y.; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was predeceased by a granddaughter, Susan Plossl, and three siblings, Maybelle Myers, Mildred Morgan and John Lewis Brown II.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 10, at the Shunk United Methodist Church with Rev. Richard Leonard and Pastor Jerry Schmidt officiating. In lieu of flowers, her family suggests those who wish make a memorial in Mrs. Frey's name to the Shunk U.M. Church or to a charity of one's choice . Pepper Funeral Home in Canton is assisting the family with arrangements.
