LEGO Wizards Kick-Off the Season
9/12/2012 10:35:00 AM
SAYRE, PA -- The LEGO Wizards, a new 4-H club from Sayre, Pa., kicked off the season with a family potluck dinner to discuss an upcoming FIRST LEGO League tournament that will be held on Saturday, November 10, 2012 at Corning Community College.

“This is a new and exciting experience that my 4-Hers plan on participating in,” stated Minette Van Dermark, LEGO Wizards club leader. “They will be working extremely hard for the next eight weeks to gain knowledge and familiarity with the robotics in order to advance on to the state level.”

FIRST LEGO League (FLL) is a robotics program for youth ages 9 to16 years old, which is designed to get children excited about science and technology and to teach them valuable employment and life skills. Teams are made up of ten children, with at least one adult coach, and are expected to program a robot and participate in the yearly challenge.

In early fall, FLL releases a Challenge, which is based on a real-world scientific topic; this year the Challenge is improving the quality of life for seniors by helping them continue to be independent, engaged, and connected to their communities. Past Challenges have been based on topics such as nanotechnology, climate, quality of life for individuals with disabilities, and transportation. By designing Challenges around such topics, participants are exposed to potential career paths within a chosen Challenge topic.

“Not only are my 4-Hers learning team work and life skills, they also have the opportunity to explore a career path if they choose to use this talent,” Van Dermark said.

After the FIRST LEGO League tournament in November, the LEGO Wizards may have the opportunity to travel to the state tournament, national tournament and even an international tournament. Traveling and competing in these challenges take a lot of hard work, time, and money. Any donations towards the LEGO Wizards to continue their educational support can be sent to the Extension Office at 200 Main Street, Suite 3, Towanda, PA 18848.
