Bruce Whitmore Schnure, 98, of 14 West Third St., Watsontown, died Sunday, July 29, 2012 at the Evangelical Community Hospital emergency room.
He was born April 4, 1914 in Laurelton, a son of the late Nevin and Ethel (Bogenrief) Schnure. He married the former Myrtle Hironimus and they celebrated 70 years of marriage until her death in 2005.
He was a graduate of Hartley Township high school. He started his working career at the Laurelton Foundry and later transferred to the Watsontown Foundry where he served as the superintendent for many years.
Bruce was a longtime member of First Evangelical Lutheran Church, Watsontown.
He was also a member of the Watsontown Masonic Lodge No. 401 F&AM for 63 years, the Keystone Rod & Gun Club, and a member of the Watsontown Lions Club where he received the Melvin Jones award for outstanding humanitarian services, was past president and treasurer, received Lion of the Year award in 2003, and had 58 years of perfect attendance.
Bruce had a chance to try out for the Philadelphia Phillies and St. Louis Cardinals professional baseball teams, but declined because of his loyalty to his wife and family whom he loved spending time with. He also enjoyed golfing, hunting and fishing.
Surviving are one son, Karl Schnure of Wyalusing; two grandsons and one granddaughter-in-law, Ron Schnure of Wyalusing and James and Carolyn Schnure of LeRaysville; one sister and brother-in-law, Bernice and Robert Dluge of Elysburg; two great-granddaughters; and six great-great-grandchildren.
In addition to his wife and parents, he was predeceased by one son, C. Eugene Schnure; and three brothers, Bill, Kenneth and Dean Schnure.
Friends will be received from 10 a.m. to noon on Thursday, Aug. 2, at First Evangelical Lutheran Church, 400 Main St., Watsontown, where the funeral will be held at noon with his pastor, the Rev. James H. Fladland officiating.
A Masonic service will be held at graveside following the committal in Watsontown Cemetery.
The family will provide the flowers and suggests memorial contributions be made to First Evangelical Lutheran Church, 400 Main St., Watsontown, PA 17777.
