The business was sold in the mid 1980s, and following their retirement, Roland and Doris traveled extensively throughout the United States and Canada in their RV. Roland was an avid fly fisherman and was joined by his son Paul on many fishing trips. Roland enjoyed woodworking and especially photography. A number of his photographs were published in the New York Botanical Gardens' "Wild Flowers of the United States."

He is survived by his son, Paul Houseknecht of Vero Beach, Fla.; granddaughters, Christina Davis and husband Jeffrey of Seven Valleys and Jessica Healy and husband Dan of Baltimore, Md.; great granddaughter Amy Davis; his brother, Donald Houseknecht of Southport, N.Y.; sister-in-law Louise Houseknecht of Athens; nephews John Haines, DDS and wife Lorraine of Monroeton and Lynn Haines and wife of Venice, Fla.; and niece Karen Blackwell and husband of Troy. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Doris, on April 3, 2005; brothers Harold, Harry, Gerald, and sister Eleanor.

The funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, May 29, 2012 at the Maryott-Bowen Funeral Home, 217 York Ave., Towanda, with Rev. Sandy Brant, pastor of the Monroeton United Methodist Church, officiating. Interment will follow in the Monroeton Cemetery, Monroeton. There are no calling hours.
