CORNING, NY -- Corning Community College is hosting its fourth Day of Service, From the Community, For the Community, on Friday, April 20 and Saturday, April 21, 2012 at various community locations as a way to give back to local organizations. We invite members of the media to stop by and see our dedicated volunteers giving back to our communities. Approximately 150 employees, students, and alums will participate in almost 15 community service events including:
Friday, April 20
All Day Activities:
Faith in Action, variety of homes in the Corning area
Helping elderly in the community with outside landscaping, spring clean-up activities.
8 a.m. - Noon Activities
Meals on Wheels, 144 Cedar Street, Corning (basement of the United Methodist Church) – Preparing and packing meals to be delivered to 250 elderly in the Corning-Painted Post School District.
Meals on Wheels, 150 Fox Street, Elmira – Assisting with preparing, packing, and delivering meals to the Elmira/Elmira Heights/Wellsburg area.
1 - 3 p.m. Activities
Food Bank of the Southern Tier, 945 County Route 64, Elmira – Projects include repacking bulk foods.
2 - 4 p.m. Activities
Blankets for the Community, Corning Community College’s Airport Corporate Park facility, T100, Daniel Zenker Drive, Big Flats – Projects include assembling quilts for local domestic violence safe houses.
Chemung County Humane Society & SPCA, 2435 State Route 352, Elmira – Projects will focus on dog bathing, kitten room beautification, surgical room sanitation, and animal socialization.
Corning Area Youth Center, 280 Princeton Avenue Extension, Corning- Projects include painting the facility, interacting with the children and serving dinner at 5 p.m.
Eldridge Park, 96 Eldridge Park Drive, Elmira – Projects include landscaping, litter removal, carousel maintenance, and more.
Founders Pavilion, 205 East First Street, Corning – Projects include conversing with residents, providing musical entertainment by the CCC Student Choir, participating in games, and attending “Happy Hour”.
Highway/Neighborhood Cleanup, Spencer Hill, Corning – Projects include the beautification of Spencer Hill road and surrounding neighborhood.
Sewing for Charity, R213, Classroom Building, Spencer Hill Campus, Corning – Sewing pillowcases for Domestic Violence Shelters.
Spencer Crest Nature Center, Spencer Hill Road Spring Clean-up.
Woodlawn Children’s Center, Elmira, NY, 346 Woodlawn Avenue, Elmira, NY
Beautifying the facility and compiling craft projects.
Saturday, April 21
9 a.m. – 3 p.m. Activities:
Habitat for Humanity, 222 Decatur St., Corning – Volunteers will provide landscaping and other assistance for a family selected by Habitat for Humanity.
11 a.m. – 3 p.m. Activities
Cool Kids ECOfest, Corning Community College, 1 Academic Drive, Corning –
ECOfest is a fun, informative, educational program for all ages. Activities include an E-scrap drive, sneaker recycling, vendors, information tables, wildlife demonstration, and more.
Additional volunteer activities include a local food drive.
