Juanita Ernestine Bruce Searfoss, 83

Juanita Ernestine Bruce Searfoss, 83, of Belleview Gardens, Cortland, N.Y., died Saturday Dec. 17 at the Cortland Memorial Nursing Facility after a lengthy illness surrounded by her loving family.

Mrs. Searfoss, daughter of the late Freddie Mae (Skinner) and Ernest Bruce, was born and raised in Denton, Texas.

She met Leo Neal Searfoss, a soldier in World War II from Sayre, Pa., and they married in Sayre on May 13, 1944.

Mrs. Searfoss, a stunning southern belle, loved and respected by all who were fortunate enough to know her, is survived by her faithful husband of 61 years, Leo Searfoss of Cortland; sons, Leo "Rocky" (Fayann) Searfoss, Jr. of Cortland, and Ernest "Sparky" Searfoss of Cortland; daughter, Karen (Mike) Sheridan of Morrisville; brothers, Fred (Mae) Bruce of Hilltop Lakes, Texas, and Wallace Bruce of Irving, Texas; sisters, Mary Catherine (Jerry) Painter of Nocona, Texas, and Carolyn Jean Branch of Denton, Texas; several nieces, nephews and cousins. Mrs. Searfoss generously guided six grandchildren to adulthood. They are Melissa Searfoss of Atlanta, Ga., Lisa (William) Crane of Cortland, Katherine Sheridan of Cortland, Ann Sheridan of Cortland, Ann Sheridan of Charlotte, N.C., Michael Sheridan of Albany, N.Y., and Jeffrey Sheridan, a student at Niagara University; and two great-grandchildren, Sheridan and Chance Crane.

Mrs. Searfoss was predeceased by brothers, Joe Bob Bruce, Frank Hayden Bruce, and Curtis Paul Bruce; and sister, Peggy Sanford.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, May 13 at 4 p.m. at Wright-Beard Funeral Home, 9 Lincoln St., Courtland, NY. 13045 with calling hours from 2-4 p.m. prior to the service.
